From celebrating the year of Jan van Eyck and Beethoven, paying homage to some modern painters like Andy Warhol, to a big art show by Marina Abramović, there’s going to be something for everyone when it comes to art this year. To make a choice of which exhibition to visit for you a bit easier, I did a bit of research and made a list with ten best art exhibitions in European museums in 2020 you shouldn’t miss.
The end of the year always feels like closing a chapter of my life to me. I love to reflect on what went well, where I travelled and all the achievements from the previous year. I believe it’s an excellent way to get inspired and kick off the next year. So, here is my 2019 in Review with some of my favourite trips, blogging and personal goals and accomplishments.
December is one of the best and most magical months to travel to Europe. Cities are glowing with beautiful decoration, many Christmas markets are organised, and everything looks so festive. Before the new Amsterdam South-North metro line was opened in mid-2018, a ferry was the only way for cyclists and pedestrians to travel to and from Amsterdam Noord neighbourhood. One of those daily commuters was an artist Rachelle Meyer. During a short 15-minutes ride she made numerous sketches of her fellow Amsterdammers. Belgium is definitely one of my favourite countries in the world. You can open up a map of it, pick up any town, and there is a big chance it’s going to be gorgeous, have some fascinating history and, of course, it’s own beer production. That’s why weekend trips to Belgium became a regular thing for my family and me. A few days ago, we’ve spent a weekend in Ypres and were absolutely amazed by its charm, beautiful architecture, and intriguing past.
Although being famous for its Golden Ages, Rembrandt‘s and Vermeer’s paintings at the Rijksmuseum, and the biggest collection of Van Gogh’s works, Amsterdam has a vibrant contemporary art scene, as well. And the best time to explore it is during the annual Amsterdam Art Weekend.
Angels becoming demons, fish with a belly full of smaller fish, spiders playing the instruments and all the different kind of monsters painted in a most creative way… All of them could be found on Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s paintings and drawings. 2019 marks 450 years since the artist’s death and many museums and cultural institutions are marking the year of Bruegel in Belgium by organising some interesting exhibitions and event.
