Johannes Vermeer is one of the most famous Dutch 17th-century artists. Although he is known worldwide today, his life and work are still veiled in mystery. Vermeer was almost entirely unknown for two hundred years after his death, leaving only 34 (confirmed) artworks behind him. He was one of the first painters in art history who started experimenting with the camera in his work. With Rijksmuseum preparing the largest-ever exhibition about Johannes Vermeer in spring 2023, it’s an excellent opportunity to learn more about that fascinating artist.
I’m following the fantastic work of Marija Ljubičić for some time already. Among other things, she’s creating a round-shaped pastel illustrations showing the sites from around Europe. In that unusual format, these cities, buildings and monuments are presented from another perspective. Since Marija is combining art and travel in a fantastic way, I thought she would be a great artist to introduce in our next interview.
I present to you today Croatian artist and illustrator Maja Tomljanović, whose work I recently discovered and got so impressed with.
I’m always on the lookout for some interesting artists and illustrators. And especially the ones whose work is inspired by travel and different destinations. Well, Maja’s work ticked all those boxes. So I was thrilled when she agreed to have a conversation with me and give an interview for Culture Tourist readers.
