The Rijksmuseum account is my favourite place on Instagram! It’s informative, educational and entertaining. I love their posts in which they show you details in paintings and tell you some stories behind them. On the Rijksmuseum Instagram account, they often share behind-the-scenes work so you can see how the artworks are researched and restored or how exhibitions are being prepared. If you’re going to follow only one from this list of the best museum Instagram accounts to follow, make it the Rijksmuseum.

The National Gallery, London

My favourite part of the National Gallery’s Instagram account is the short videos they share on it. Led by the experts, they tell the stories behind the artworks within the short video form. The National Gallery’s permanent collection offers a fantastic insight into the development of art history, so seeing their highlights on your Instagram feed is always an art treat.

Art Institute Chicago

Art Institute Chicago is home to one of the world’s best museum collections, and they love sharing it on their Instagram account. From the Renaissance to some of the highlights of modern art, you’ll find them all shared on their Instagram. Its great feature is ‘Ask our staff’ and ‘On this day’ highlights series in which you can learn so much about art and how the museums work.

Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

The Van Gogh Museum runs one of the most creative among the museum Instagram accounts. Any Van Gogh’s art lover should follow to enjoy seeing his beautiful paintings daily on their phones. However, their most unique posts are the ones in which they invite their followers to share how Van Gogh inspires them. My favourite were the cakes people made for Van Gogh’s birthday in 2020.

The Orsay Museum, Paris

The Orsay Museum is home to one of the best collections of Impressionists in Paris and beyond. Following their Instagram account will give you a daily dose of Impressionist art. They also host short art history lessons within their ‘5 Things to know’ highlight which are great for getting a brief insight into some of their most famous artworks.

MoMA, New York

The Museum of Modern Art in New York is home to the artworks made by Claude Monet, Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko and many more. If you’re into the modern art, follow the MoMA Instagram account. You’ll enjoy some of these masterpieces popping on your feed daily. They also have a series of Instagram reels in which you can learn more about some of the MoMA artworks, artists and modern art styles.

Rembrandt House Museum, Amsterdam

The Rembrandt House is one of my favourite museums in Amsterdam. However, they also have one of the best museum Instagram accounts. It’s a great example of how art from a single painter could be interpreted and inspiring in many ways. Some of my favourite content was within the Poor Man’s Rembrandt Project when the museum invited visitors to get tattooed in a museum with tattoos inspired by Rembrandt. With so much great content, you won’t get bored of this fantastic museum Instagram account.

The Louvre Museum, Paris

The Louvre Museum is one of the best museums in Europe. With more than 35,000 artworks on display, you can visit it over and over again. Following this museum’s Instagram account will allow you to enjoy its fantastic collection every day. They share photos of their artworks, stories about them and the artists who created them. It has five million followers, making it one of the most popular museum Instagram accounts.

Victoria & Albert Museum in London is the largest museum in the world dedicated to applied and decorative arts and design. So, on their Instagram account, you can enjoy some great graphic and product design, fashion, photography and everything related.

The Met, New York

The Met Museum in New York is one of the best museums in the US. In its collections spanning centuries of art, you can see artworks from Ancient Egypt, medieval times, the Italian Renaissance and some masterpieces made by the Impressionists or Van Gogh. Similarly, on their Instagram account, you can learn more about the fantastic artefacts and enjoy them daily at home.
