Culture Tourist Private Museum Tours in Amsterdam

Why just “visit” a museum when you can walk through the stories that changed the world?

Amsterdam is more than a city of canals; it is the living heartbeat of the Golden Age. It is a place where masters like Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh once walked the very same streets you see today.

Join Culture Tourist for a private museum tour in Amsterdam. Discover the soul of Dutch art through a guided tour led by an art historian and published author.

Why travellers choose my tours:

  • The golden thread: I don’t just show you paintings. I show you how Rembrandt’s 1660s painting influenced texture in Van Gogh’s artworks, connecting the dots across centuries
  • Story-first guiding: No dry dates or boring lectures. As an art historian and author of an art-heist novel, I give you  a “backstage pass” to the 17th century
  • Private tours: I keep groups private to ensure you can actually see the brushstrokes and ask the questions that matter most to you
  • Priority access: Your time in Amsterdam is precious. I handle the logistics and have your tickets ready so you can skip the stress and head straight to the art
Tea was an absolutely exceptional guide for the Rijksmuseum, and this experience was the highlight of our trip to Amsterdam! From the moment we began, her depth of knowledge and passion for art history were evident. She didn’t just walk us through the galleries — she brought the Dutch Masters to life, weaving historical context, political backdrop, and personal stories into each painting. Van Gogh Museum Tour

Van Gogh Museum Private tour

Duration: 2 hours | Price: 200 EUR (private group, 1 – 6 people, excluding entrance tickets)

Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous artists of all time. However, few know that he was a restless modern traveller who lived in four countries and held multiple professions before picking up a brush at the age of 27. Though his career lasted only a decade, he produced over 1,800 artworks.

In this tour, we use Vincent’s intimate letters to his brother, Theo, to let the artist tell his own story. We’ll explore his evolution from the dark tones of The Potato Eaters to the radiant yellows of Sunflowers.

Tour highlights:

  • A world-class collection: Gain exclusive insight into the world’s largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh, spanning his entire career
  • Masterpieces in context: Go beyond the frame of icons like The Sunflowers and The Potato Eaters to understand the emotional stories and techniques behind them
  • Vincent’s own words: Hear the artist’s story told through his intimate letters written to his brother, Theo

  • Art as a mirror of culture: Discover how 17th-century paintings reveal the roots of modern Amsterdam – from the city’s famous liberal social attitudes to its historic obsession with food and commerce

The HIGHLIGHT of our Amsterdam trip. Wow! Tea is an incredible guide in every way – engaging, clear, knowledgeable, and thoughtful. I asked many questions and she knew the answer to each one, very impressive. Even my husband (who generally dislikes museums) enjoyed her tour immensely as she is great at catering to different levels of art interest or knowledge. I especially appreciated that she offered to have us to sit down for a while in the middle of the tour, as 2 hours can be a while on your feet. She was great with getting us through a crowd to get a close look at the paintings, and her tour was so great that we bought her book in the gift shop afterwards. We are American and found her English to be perfect, very easy to understand. With other tour guides on our trip we struggled a bit, but not with Tea. It simply would not have been nearly as good of an experience just walking through the museum alone. HIGHLY recommend booking this! (Julia, Rijksmuseum tour in February 2026)

Women in the Rijksmuseum Tour

Duration: 2 hours | Price: 200 EUR (private group, 1 – 6 people, excluding entrance tickets)

This special Rijksmuseum tour isn’t only about the “muses” on a canvas. Instead, you’re going to meet the warriors, the savvy businesswomen, the activists, and the pioneering female artists who changed the course of art history. Even if you’ve been to the Rijksmuseum a dozen times, I promise you’ll leave seeing these galleries in a whole new light.

You’ll stand before the breathtaking detail of Rachel Ruysch, whose flower paintings once outsold Rembrandt, and discover the bold “JL” monogram of Judith Leyster, the star painter whose work was mistakenly credited to her male colleagues for generations. We’ll also explore the power portraits of Thérèse Schwartze, one of the most successful Amsterdam painters in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Tour highlights:

  • Beyond the muse: Shift the perspective from women as passive subjects to women as warriors, entrepreneurs, and activists who defied the conventions of their time
  • Who were women in art: Get to learn about the female artists in art history
  • Newly acquired artworks: Explore the masterpieces recently acquired by the museum to highlight more of the female artists worth seeing in the Rijksmuseum

Last year Tea was our private guide in the Rijksmuseum and she made such an amazing impression on us that we had to also book her for the Van Gogh Museum. We now share Tea’s love for both museums.
Tea is an amazing person and fun to be with. She truly is an art historian in heart and soul. So much passion and such great stories. Every painting comes alive with so much attention to details. (Dennis G, Rijksmuseum tour in March 2025 & Van Gogh Museum tour in February 2026)

Who is your museum guide?

Tea Gudek Snajdar in the Rijksmuseum

My name is Tea Gudek Snajdar, and I will be your museum guide! I am an art historian (MA), museum educator, published author, blogger and occasional curator.

I’ve been organising private and small-group tours at the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Rembrandt House Museum since 2016. During that time, I explored their collections and famous paintings in detail. I also researched locations linked to the life and work of Vincent van Gogh in Europe during the two-week-long trip from Amsterdam to the south of France. I wrote an art crime novel, Following Van Gogh, inspired by those locations, but also the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum collections.

I’m also writing articles on topics of cultural tourism, travel, museums and art.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Culture Tourist private Museum Tours in Amsterdam for you?

Culture Tourist private Museum Tours are approximately 2 hours long, guided museum visits led by an expert art historian (MA). You will learn about some famous artists, art movements and artworks during this time. Although we will cover many topics, it will all be done in a relaxing and enjoyable way.

These museum tours are for you if:

  • You’ve missed a few classes of Art History during your education and would like to fill in the gaps now
  • You are planning a trip to the Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and would like to make it more meaningful
  • You know some basics about these artists, but would like to learn more during your visit to Amsterdam
  • You already know a lot and would like to have an in-depth discussion about these artists’ work during your visit

These museum tours are private and will be entirely adjusted to your interests and level of knowledge. That’s why they are suitable for everyone.

Are these tours suitable for children?

Absolutely! I always try to keep younger visitors engaged by turning paintings into a scavenger hunt for stories and hidden details. If you have very young children, I recommend the Rijksmuseum or Rembrandt’s Amsterdam tour.

What if I have never studied art history?

Then you’re my favourite kind of guest. I skip the academic jargon and focus on the human stories – the artists’ life stories, and the technical “magic tricks” these artists used. You’ll leave feeling like an expert, even if you’ve never set foot in a gallery before.

Are the museums wheelchair accessible?

The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are fully accessible with elevators and ramps.

The Rembrandt House Museum is a historic 17th-century building with narrow stairs, and it’s not wheelchair accessible. Please let me know in advance if you need any assistance so that I can tailor the route to your needs.

How much walking is involved?

During the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum tours you’ll spent two hours standing and walking within a museum. However, I also try to make a few “sitting stops” in front of major masterpieces to give your feet a break while we dive into the history.

Rembrandt’s Amsterdam includes around 2 kilometres (1.5 miles) of walking at a leisurely pace. The Rembrandt House Museum is a 17th-century house, and we’ll be using its narrow stairs to get from one floor to another.
