Autumn in European museums is a time of the year when some of the best exhibitions of the year are usually organised. I did a bit of research and have looked for some of the best exhibitions in European museums to visit in autumn 2019. And it seems like we’re going to have an exciting end of the year.

#1 – Leonardo da Vinci

Louvre, Paris, October 24th 2019 – February 24th 2020

Probably one of the most expected exhibitions of the year is going to be organised in Louvre this autumn. 2019 is the year that’s marking 500 years since the death of one of the most famous artists of all times – Leonardo da Vinci. Louvre Museum in Paris is going to organise a unique exhibition on which many of his paintings, drawings and other artefacts could be seen at the same place. The exhibition is already getting a lot of attention, and it’s definitely going to be very popular.

#2 – Keith Haring

Tate Liverpool, June 14th 2019- November 10th 2019

More than 85 works of art, posters, photographs and videos are going to be on display in Tate Liverpool, celebrating the work of one of the most famous contemporary artists, Keith Haring. If you’re going to be in the UK this autumn, then this is definitely an exhibition you shouldn’t miss in 2019.

#3 – Rembrandt – Velazquez: Dutch & Spanish Masters

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, October 11th 2019 – January 19th 2020

Organised in collaboration with the Prado Museum, this exhibition in the Rijksmuseum is going to showcase some of the most important 17th-century painters from Spain and the Netherlands. Rembrandt van Rijn, Diego Velázquez, Frans Hals, Bartolomé Murillo, Johannes Vermeer and Francisco Zurbarán, are just among the some who’s work is going to be on display.

#4 – Salvador Dali – The Persistence of Opposites

Matera, until November 30th 2019

An exceptional exhibition with more than 200 statues, paintings and drawings created by a famous Surrealist artist is on display at the Italian town of Matera. And literary, the whole town became a museum for this purpose. Dali’s statues are displayed all around the town. However, more fragile work is exhibited at the cave complex of Our Lady of Virtues and San Nicola dei Greci in the heart of the Sassi.

#5 – Gauguin Portraits

National Gallery London, October 7th 2019 – January 26th 2020

More than 50 portraits created by a famous French painter are going to be on display this autumn during the exhibition dedicated to his work in the National Gallery London. From his early work until the later one, and his experiments with contrasts, this is going to be a unique chance to see so many of his portraits at the same place.

#6 – Chagall, Picasso, Mondrian and Others – Migrant Artists in Paris

Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, September 21st 2019 – February 2nd 2020

With this exhibition, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is going to deal with a topic of immigration by showcasing the work of more than 50 immigrant artists who were living and working in Paris between 1900 and 1950. It’s also going to be a rare chance to see a huge collection of Chagalls’ paintings this museum owns.

#7 – Van Gogh’s Inner Circle. Friends, Family, Models

Het Noordbrabants Museum, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, September 21st 2019 – January 12th 2020

 

An exhibition dedicated to people that were close and important to Vincent van Gogh. You’ll be able to learn about them through the letters, paintings and drawings created by this Dutch artist.

#8 – Degas at the Opera

Musee d’Orsay, Paris, September 24th 2019 – January 19th 2020

Edgar Degas, one of the most famous French Impressionist painters, was truly amazed by ballet, movement and dancers. He was visiting opera and theatre frequently in a search for the motives and models for his next paintings. Exhibition organised this autumn at the Musee d’Orsay is going to focus on that part of his work.

#9 – Peggy Guggenheim. The Last Dogaressa

Guggenheim, Venice, September 21st 2019 – January 27th 2020

The exhibition is going to celebrate the work of Peggy Guggenheim, by showcasing the art pieces she has collected between 1948 and 1979, while she lived in Venice.

#10 – The Impressionists and Photography

Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, Madrid, October 15th 2019 – January 26th 2020

The invention of photography was essential for the Impressionist painters back in the second half of the 19th century. The exhibition organised in Madrid is going to examine the connections between the two. It’s definitely one of the best exhibitions organised in European museums in autumn 2019.
